I realized I never posted about my event planning internship! What an amazing experience!

I have planned personal events before and have always thought of myself as a creative person when it comes to coordinating events. This internship allowed me to do that and have it apply to a business. During this internship I planned 2 events:

  1. A Celebration Dinner honoring a community member for her services
  2. A groundbreaking event to mark the start of a major addition

These events were back-to-back. The dinner was 6 o’clock on a Thursday night and the groundbreaking was 2pm on Friday. This helped with decorations since we were able to use the same flowers, table cloths and linens, as well as the same fall theme.

We started with the guest list since we needed to know how many people we were planning on attending both events. We ended up having about 65 guests at the dinner and 30 guests at the groundbreaking. The dinner was a first event that we were trying to establish so it could end up being an annual event.

Once the guest list was outlined, I started designing the invites. These were simple with yellow leaves to match the fall theme and laid out to set the tone of an elegant dinner. I eventually made the program to match this invite to show consistency.

The flower arrangements were so fun to decide and brought back some great memories of wedding planning. The colors were orange, red, yellow and gold and turned out exactly as I pictured them. There were some rough patches trying to turn the vision in my head into the final product but they turned out beautifully.

The groundbreaking event required some outside help. The company I interned with brought in a tent and all the direct for the ceremony. My main focus was to make sure everything went smoothly and that I got great pictures of it. Check and check.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I am so excited to continue working on events in the future. Below are some of my pictures I got from the event to help you see what the end result was! Until next time…

2017: Playing Catch Up

I fell off the wagon there for a little bit! This last year of classes has been a tough one and surprisingly none of them had a blog assignment.

The fall semester I had a lot of group assignments but very few individual assignments to share. Some of the group projects I did were:

  • A research paper on the potential of Crocs shoes reaching a younger target audience such as college students
  • A presentation on purchasing media in Petoskey, Michigan
  • Several group presentations on advertising cases where we analyzed the problem, provided critical factors and solutions. Our final presentation was on Jim Beam Devil’s Cut which was very fun and interesting

This current semester has been busy. I am starting to see the light at the end of this educational tunnel but it isn’t over yet.

I’m currently in a copywriting class which has been extremely fun and interesting. It has given me such a great opportunity to see what copywriters do and lets me be a little more creative with my classwork. For this class I chose Bud Light as the brand I would advertise for. Here are some of the projects I’ve completed thus far.

This was a newspaper ad for a local grocery store to advertise the sale of Bud Light. The criteria was to include 5 varieties of the brand, show how organization is used in newspaper advertising and to include the necessities such as headline, description and price.

This next ad was for a billboard. The criteria was to use less than 7 words and to make sure it was bold and memorable. Since my “One Thing” in this campaign is “Bud Light brings people together” I made this apparent with the image as well as the text.

Our next assignment is to generate a radio ad which has been challenging but exciting!

I have also been working on a campaign for a local hockey stick company for another class of mine while working on my personal brand. This has been a group assignment as well but has been good to get the real life experience of working with a client in a team setting. Generating tactics, strategies and a budget have been challenging but we are making progress and are coming up with some great ideas so far!

Outside of school I have been a busy bee as well!

We went to Disney World back in December on a family vacation which was extremely fun and a good way to celebrate the end of the fall semester. I loved seeing and learning all about Disney while I was there and witnessing all their great business practices. (Is it weird that I was noticing these things on vacation???) It really is the happiest place on earth!

Me and my husband are also embarking on a new adventure as of recent– We are buying a new home! It has been a stressful and long process and we are not done with it yet but I can’t wait to experience homeownership in a new way. The homes we are looking at have so much potential and give us some great opportunities!

I have also met with some really great people in the last few months to discuss what it’s like to work in the advertising/PR/events/promotions line of work. Not only am I getting good insight on what to look for and what to expect in my career but I’m also getting some great new ideas from them!

So that’s what I’ve been doing. I keep myself busy and I am in the final countdown until I can officially say I have my degree in Advertising and Public Relations from Grand Valley! I’ll try to post more of my projects once they are completed at the end of the semester!

What have I been doing?

So… It’s been a while!

Some of the things I decided to do this summer include some projects around the house, read some books, work on my internship and be outside.

My productivity could be reaching higher levels but so far this is on my accomplished list:

  • New/used patio furniture with a spectacular view of my flower garden (Thank you mom & dad)
  • a very neat and tidy garage (Thank you Hubby)
  • planned a vacation for our first wedding anniversary
  • planned an event for my internship
  • finished one book and started another
  • gotten a tan
  • trained my puppy
  • got a new camera and have been taking a million pictures of my puppy, food, and my flowers (pictures below)
  • tore down some ugly chair rail on the guest bedroom/office of my house to paint it a more relaxing color. Right now it is lime green and taupe. (Painting is still on the to-do list)

For or the rest of the summer I plan to focus on my internship, getting organized again and gaining motivation for my very last year of college! Once my internship details are more developed I will post some of my work but in the meantime, here are some of my pictures from this summer that are not work related! 🙂

Networking: Round 2

For my second networking opportunity I actually gained a lot out of the smaller event. This was an internal celebration since the company I work at received a reward. First I met Ashleigh (right picture), and found out that we both are more right brain thinkers and are inspired by design. She actually works on the same floor as me but I had never met her before so I am glad I could find a connection so close to where I am now.

I also officially joined our event planning committee at work to help with our internal parties and special celebrations (committee pictured on the left). Funny enough, this event was not planned by them but more of the senior management. I am so excited I was able to connect with the people I work with and gain a new experience out of it as well. Some of the people in the committee were strangers to me as well so it was nice to meet so many new people and enter a new group to do something I love with multiple departments.

Google Certification

I got an 18 out of 20 on the Google Certification and I have to say that the information is extremely relevant. I am glad we were able to use this as part of our assessment for the glad since it is such valuable information to know today. I love that Google Analytics has so many ways to teach the information as well. The videos are informative but in case you miss something they also have a text summary to review.

The assessment went over a good amount of the fundamentals of analytics information that they teach in the course. I took notes going through the course and only missed the one question because I selected one too many options (and another because I apparently didn’t click the answer hard enough). I would definitely recommend the course to our fellow students at GVSU and other colleges as well.

Technology In Careers

For this assignment, we had to look for job postings that we would be interested in and determine what the technology requirements were for the job. I did find a few that did not have requirements listed but the other jobs did have a few basic skills.

Social Media: Now and Later

When I was in middle school it was cool to have an Xanga page or MySpace. That eventually turned into a Facebook fad that blew up into Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and many other sites.

The Stats

Facebook was started in 2004 (Facebook, 2016) and now has 1.59 billion monthly users (Zephoria, 2015). Zephoria also mentions that Facebook use has been increasing in users by about 17% each year. When I first starting using Facebook in 2006, it was an exciting new way of communicating and sharing pictures with friends. This was a new thing to us but now it seems like everyday life because there are not many people who do not have a Facebook anymore.

Other social media sites seemed to follow pretty quickly and users grew on those rapidly as well. Today, most of my friends have a Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Twitter so I get to keep up with them on all mediums. The Pew Research Center found that early two-thirds of American adults (65%) use social networking sites (Perrin, 2015). I have included the chart that Pew Research Center included in their article to show how social media has increased in the last 10 years.

Using Social Media

I personally use social media to keep up with all of my friends and what is going on in the community. I also use it for sharing pictures with all my friends and family. I believe that most people do use it for this but there are some people who use it as an outlet to voice their opinions and feelings.

The main thing I have seen change with social media is that it is used less as a communication method due to cellphones and texting I believe. When I first started using it, I would write on my friends walls and make plans on Facebook where now I can just text them and get it figured out. The other major change it the expansion of use. Friends, family, employers, businesses and schools all use social media where at first it was just for individuals who wanted to connect.

Benefits/Disadvantages

The benefits I see in social media is connection. I can keep in touch with my friends and family who are out of state and see what they are doing as well as connect with classmates, future employers and businesses that I have an interest in. I feel this has made it easier for people to remain connected and build relationships even if they cannot meet face-to-face.

The disadvantages that come from social media are the disconnect of face-to-face interactions. Even though it is easier for us to remain connected to people over social media, I feel that more people are shying away from in person relationships. I also feel that social media takes up a big portion of our lives. A majority of people and businesses ask to connect on social media and there is not a lot of looking away from it for anything anymore. Even my degree requires me to be on social media and actively use it on a daily basis.

Another disadvantage brought up by The Research Pedia is “While social media can help people / companies create good image, it can also be used to tranish an image with false claims. A viral social media post talking how a product can cause problems can lead to huge losses to a firm. Till the time the company realises most of the damage is done” (2016).

Overall, social media has expanded and isn’t going anywhere but there are some disadvantages to the use as well. I think we still need to have the physical connection with people in our community outside of social media sites but do think believe they help us remain connected as well.
